  • During April my girlfriend and I stayed at this hotel during our trip to Japan. During the first fifteen minutes we were advised that we could only have a smoking room (though a non-smoking room was confirmed) and we were advised that the bellmen couldn't find our luggage (taken when we exited a cab). I was told no non-smoking room was available and advised the person that I would have to leave because I have allergies. Then suddenly a room was available but on the bottom floor facing an air-shaft. The next morning we asked the concierge to get theater tickets and were advised by email that they had been reserved. However, shortly thereafter we were advised by email that it was a mistake. When we returned to the hotel the concierge desk stated that they could now get tickets but it was for the wrong night. The following day my friend told the desk that she wanted a manicure but was told there was no facility for same in the hotel. We asked if there was someplace locally and were told there was not. Of course, there was a place to get a manicure less than a block away. It went on and on - at the highest price for a room in Kyoto. I wrote to complain and demanded that something be done. I was emailed that they would try to improve the service and that the next time I was in Kyoto I would receive an upgrade. Be guided by this. I am not a complainer. We stayed at the Shangri-La in Tokyo and I will give that hotel 5 stars. I gave this hotel one star because the lobby is gorgeous.

  • beautiful new Hotel. Staff is very good willing but with lack of experience.
    English is here and there difficult. Hotelroom beautiful designed, but not always practical. Lack of space in the bathroom due to design.

  • great value for money with very nice rooms. especially on the top floor ... so it is worthwhile to get an upgrade versus standard rooms, good service , the spa is a little bit dark but clean and well planned, very good location

  • this is a fantastic hotel, the location is perfect and the design and product are top noch.
    What was really stands out was the customer service.
    They have very good mix of local/international staff who can serve the customers of all around of the world.
    The service and energy of the main entrance and the concierge are just OUTSTANDING!
    We will definately come back!

  • Well located but on a quiet street, this hotel is everything you could ask for. The architectural features and decorating are fascinating, elegant but in the wonderful Japanese way of simplicity. The common spaces are welcoming. The service is especially good and personable.
    The guest rooms are on the large size for Japan. The showers are double headed, one being a large rain style. We loved the showers. They even have a delightfully wrapped Kyoto soap as well as the usual amenities. Here they are from the wonderful Asprey. The room has everything you would expect in a Ritz Carlton, the floor plan is very liveable. My only complaint would be that the closet is a bit dark.
    The breakfasts in La Locando are wonderful. The pastries are truly the best I've ever had.
    We also had a lunch there. They serve delicious Neopolitan chef meets Japanese sensibilities Italian food. If you are lucky, you will have Sneha as your server. She can lead you down a delicious path.

  • We stayed 3 nights in this hotel which is one of the best if not the best hotel we have ever stayed. In.The architecture ,design, materials used are all stunning. Very generous room with a view over the east mountain and the river Kamo. Very practical for Gion too walking by the river.The staff is very professional and kind. Very generous Japanese or western breakfast too.

  • We were fortunate to stay at the Ritz Carlton Kyoto a couple of weeks ago. It is a wonderful and long-needed addition to the hotel landscape in Kyoto (and Osaka and the entire Kansai region, actually). Kyoto has lacked a destination hotel to match it's ancient beauty and true Japanese feel. The luxury properties in Kyoto have not been particularly luxurious and generally fall along the lines of international chain "sameness".
    The new Ritz Carlton elegantly blends in with the landscape of Kyoto and evokes the feel of the city in every turn. This is not a hotel that could be anywhere but Kyoto. At the same time, the hotel is graced with every modern convenience and the rooms are absolutely stunning. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a beautiful and spacious corner suite facing the river, with a beautiful modern balcony. Our teenagers were in a "standard" room, but in some ways their room was even more impressive because of the intelligent use of space and sight lines that made the room seem larger than the the floor plan would indicate. The rooms were very well appointed with beautiful contemporary furnishings, coffee and tea pad makers, and cedar plank showers that brought a hinoki fragrance to the luxurious bathroom. When I describe the hotel as luxurious, it is luxury in that uniquely Japanese way--understated and elegant.
    We only had breakfast in the hotel, having a number of restaurants in the area that we had planned to visit, but that breakfast was fantastic. The pastries were all from the Pierre Herme patisserie in the hotel, and they were outstanding. My wife is still talking about the Ispahan croissants (Rose, lychee, and raspberry) as the best she has ever had, and we have had croissants nearly everywhere.
    Perhaps most importantly, the staff at the hotel were extraordinarily kind and helpful. The check-in process was very personal and reminiscent of that at most luxury ryokan in Japan.
    Overall, our stay at the hotel was a great experience and we will most certainly return--we are even talking about returning in a couple of months. If you are looking for a great experience in the Kyoto area, the Ritz Carlton Kyoto will exceed your expectations. It is expensive for the area, and absolutely worth every yen. (In comparison, we stayed at the Ritz Carlton Osaka but didn't care for it much--RC Kyoto is entirely different!)

  • We had dinner at the Hotel's restaurant and had the chance to visit the hotel.
    It is absolutely stunning from the inside and out.
    The entrance is beautifully decorated with a big and lush Bonsai tree.
    The staff are impeccably well spoken and friendly and go above and beyond their duties to help and direct you as well as showcasing the marvelous interior design and hotel amenities.
    One piece of advise, book months in advance, as otherwise you will not find a room. We tried to book 2 months ahead and it was fully booked. Truth be told, this is the only true luxury hotel in town (surprisingly enough).
    The restaurants, Locanda and Mizuki are impeccable in both service and food.
